Fault Recording System

Software Data Solutions provide support, maintenance and enhancements for Anite Limited's Incident/Fault Recording System. The product was architected and designed by SDS design engineers when they worked for Anite Telecoms Ltd.

The Incident Recording System forms part of Anite's software development process and is used not only to track and record incidents, but also to improve the end to end quality of the software delivery to Anite's customers.

The Process

As incidents, issues, or faults arise during the software development cycle, they are recorded and tracked by the system. Anite found that the Source Code software being used by them (Microsoft Source Safe, CVS and PVCS), made no provision for managing faults that impact on several files. The Fault Recording System manages faults through to Release. Ownership of the fault is undertaken electronically and controlled by the Project Manager and Quality Assurance team.

Management

A unique feature of the system is the clever use of email to manage the faults. For example, once the Project Manager authorises the work to proceed, work assignments are sent by email to the individual responsible to resolve the fault automatically. This ensures that work assignments are clearly described to those responsible for their implementation. Similar work flows apply to fault testing where notifications are sent based on Fault status. Faults can also be grouped together to form a Software Releases where the history is maintained in underlying audit tables.

Reporting

The system offers Status Reports for internal use and customer reporting in graphical and text layouts. For example one report shows the number of faults recorded for the project, the number closed and the number of fault outstanding.
